ViviMate 4K and 8K: What You Need for Ultra HD Streaming

Ultra HD only shows up when every link in the chain supports it. Here's the checklist for 4K and 8K, and an honest look at how much 8K content exists.

Large wall-mounted TV in a bright modern living room — ViviMate 4K and 8K

ViviMate supports HD, 4K and 8K playback, but the picture you see is only as sharp as the weakest link between the stream and your eyes. This guide goes through each link (source, connection, device, cable and screen) so you know what you need and why Ultra HD sometimes doesn't look the way you expected.

The resolutions at a glance

NamePixelsSuggested speed per stream
HD (720p)1280 × 7205–8 Mbps
Full HD (1080p)1920 × 10808–10 Mbps
4K Ultra HD (2160p)3840 × 216025 Mbps
8K (4320p)7680 × 432050 Mbps or more

4K has four times the pixels of 1080p, and 8K has four times the pixels of 4K. Efficient codecs keep the bandwidth from growing at the same rate, but the jump is still significant.

What you need for ViviMate in 4K

  1. A 4K stream. A channel or title must be produced in 4K to be shown in 4K. Many channels broadcast in HD, so check you've picked the 4K version where one is offered.
  2. A 4K TV, with the stick or box plugged into an HDMI input that supports 4K (on some TVs, only certain inputs do).
  3. A 4K-capable streaming device, such as a Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max, a recent Android TV box, or your Smart TV's own apps.
  4. HEVC (H.265) decoding. Most 4K streams use HEVC; nearly every 4K device from the last several years supports it in hardware.
  5. A high-speed HDMI cable if your device isn't plugged in directly.
  6. Around 25 Mbps of stable bandwidth for each 4K stream. Check with the ViviMate speed test.

What about HDR?

HDR (high dynamic range) improves brightness and colour more visibly than extra resolution does. It requires HDR in the stream itself, plus a TV and device that support the same HDR format (HDR10, HLG or Dolby Vision). When all three match, the player switches the TV into HDR automatically.

What you need for ViviMate in 8K

ViviMate is 8K-ready, meaning it can deliver an 8K stream where one exists. To actually watch one you need:

  • an 8K TV;
  • a device that can decode 8K video. In practice this is usually the 8K TV's own built-in apps, as very few streaming sticks or boxes output 8K today;
  • HDMI 2.1 if you use an external box;
  • 50 Mbps or more of stable bandwidth, ideally over a wired connection.

An honest note on 8K content: true 8K broadcasts are still rare across the whole TV industry. Most Ultra HD viewing today is 4K, and an 8K TV spends most of its time upscaling 4K and HD sources, which modern TVs do very well. Buy an 8K TV for its panel and processing, not for the amount of native 8K content.

Why 4K sometimes looks no better than HD

  • The source isn't 4K. A 4K TV shows HD channels upscaled. That's normal and not a fault.
  • Bandwidth dropped. If your connection dips, the stream may stutter or the player may fall back to a lower-quality version. Wired connections help most here.
  • The device is outputting 1080p. Check the display settings on your stick or box; set resolution to Auto or 2160p.
  • The wrong HDMI port. Some TVs support 4K at 60 Hz or HDR on only one or two inputs.
  • The player uses software decoding. Switch the player's decoder to hardware for 4K.
  • TV picture mode. "Vivid" modes over-sharpen. Try "Filmmaker", "Cinema" or "Standard".

Recommended devices for Ultra HD

Any 4K model on the ViviMate compatible devices list will handle 4K streams. For Fire TV owners, the ViviMate Firestick guide explains which models support 4K and how to optimise them. Watching through your TV's own apps? The ViviMate Smart TV guide covers picture modes and settings, and the Android guide covers 4K on Android TV boxes.

Summary

For 4K: a 4K stream, 4K TV, 4K device and about 25 Mbps. For 8K: an 8K stream, 8K TV with built-in apps or an 8K-capable box, HDMI 2.1 and 50 Mbps or more. When you're ready, compare the ViviMate plans. Every plan includes the same Ultra HD support.
